Will AIPGME 2012 be cancelled?

On national standardised testing

The AIPGME 2012 question paper leak is all over the news.Always there has been rumours about All India PG question paper being available on the night before the exam at select centers, especially Delhi. One such rumour was that if you are writing exam in Delhi, you will be approached by agents and if you are willing to pay about 5 lakhs, you will get the question paper about 12-14 hours earlier(But those arrested this year paid about 40lakhs, reflects the inflationary tendency in bribes paid).Though we never had any proof to this till now, the arrests made on the day of AIPGME 2012 proves the fact that this exam is not helping those students it is expected to benefit.

Vulnerable points

These are the vulnerable points from where a question paper maybe leaked.

1.The question paper printing press.

2.While transported to exam centers.

3.At the exam center.

The printing press and the exams centers are places where the questions papers have the greatest chance for being leaked. As the workers in these places would like some extra change, there is a chance of them abetting fraudsters in granting access to the question papers.

The one fact I noted while writing exam was that, these question paper sets were already open when brought to exam hall( except the seals of individual papers). This practice of opening the question paper sets before exam has paved way for a greater chance for questions being leaked. If there is a  fraud candidate who is writing exam for leaking it, if they act together with a high ranking official at the exam center, they can open the seal of his/her exam paper on the previous day and yet get away uncaught. This can occur because the tampered question paper can be issued to the same candidate itself on the day of exam, so that any question of malpractice won’t arise.

The only remedy is that either the exam should be online so that hard copy of question papers will not be available to people at exam centers on the day before the exam.Another option is to open each set of question paper in front of the candidates to prevent any malpractice.

Though there is news about a few arrests being made on the leaking of question papers it is highly unlikely that just a few people are involved. There maybe a greater majority enjoying the benefits, because those who are caught appears to be amateurs, venturing into this business for the first time.

Hard criminals with blessings of higher authorities will not be as foolish as these people to get caught. The chance of getting caught always exists because there will be an unsatisfied customer or one who has been denied service who will eventually tip off the police regarding the leak.

Though a crime of very high magnitude has been uncovered, there is no news regarding whether the exam will be cancelled. The exam which itself was very very tough was intended to kill off the passion any medical graduate has for the practice of medicine.Fewer than 50 questions could be read with ease, other questions were so lengthy and filled with grammatical errors that left many PG aspirants perplexed. By the time the exam finished, those writing the exam were either exhausted ,angry or both.

Now a few questions remain, in the minds of PG aspirants all over India.

1.Does AIIMS faculty know the answers of all the questions they set?

2.Why is there a difficulty in publishing the keys?

3.Will there be a re test?

The obvious answers are

1. AIIMS faculty most probably have no idea regarding the answers to those confusing questions they set.The origins of only a very few of these questions can be traced to any standard text book or reference book. Most of these questions are set based on the research conducted at AIIMS, which no one else has access to!

2.Publishing the key will lead to a lot of controversies. The practice of withholding the key shows the inability of the question setters to defend their answers.Only a question setter who has comprehensive knowledge can set a indisputable question paper. If a few persons with such high caliber are entrusted the task of setting the AIPGME question paper, keys can be published and questions can be made public.

3.Every year a few arrests have been made in connection to PGI,AIIMS and AIPGE but in near history a re test has never been conducted. It seems that these institutions just want to conduct an exam and get some students to fill their seats, rather than ensure the quality of students they take in.

The government of India and the Supreme court should take some concrete steps regarding the conduct of these exams and ensure that merit is preserved to the full extent. The government should show the spine to conduct a re-test when a fraud of this massive scale has been unearthed rather than just limit this to a few people and prevent any re-test being conducted.

Let us all hope that a fair decision will be taken and all those found guilty will be punished, even though it may seem to be a remote possibility.

Two quotes from Einstein which has inspired millions

Imagination is more important than knowledge – Albert Einstein

Imagination has no limits. It is a very sad fact that people who have knowledge fail to inspire others by planting ideas in their minds. In the medical profession only a few teachers teach students to imagine, to dream. A good teacher always inspires a student, this inspiration is what a student needs. Knowledge can be acquired from many sources, but a real motivator can change lives of students for ever.Einstein was one such motivator, he made some great theories but above all his talks inspired people to give back more to the society.

Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character- Albert Einstein

Attitude is something which shapes our destiny. It differentiates leaders from followers. A man with a great attitude towards life will find ways to enrich his life and the lives of his beloved. A leader having great attitude and character can inspire the youth to bring out the best out of them.Mahatma Gandhi and Dr.A P J Abdul Kalam were men of great character and attitude who guided us.May your attitude become stronger and imagination soar as you prepare for AIPGME 2012, success is just secondary to these gains you make during this year.

No common entrance test for medicine PG in 2012

After a long and anxious wait, the central government has decided not to conduct common entrance test for PG seats in medicine in 2012. The reasons cited are the lack of resources and expertise needed for conducting such a huge exercise nationwide.

The news has disappointed many students who had been preparing for NEET PG 2012,but has delighted students who had been studying for AIPGE 2012.Many coaching centers had already informed students that NEET PG 2012 is not going to materialize. Now students can concentrate on studies once more as they have got another chance to write their state entrance exams.

Given below are excerpts from major national dailies

The Hindu:No PG medical test in 2012

The Central government has decided not to hold the common entrance test for postgraduate medical courses next year, as proposed earlier, citing lack of resources and expertise needed for conducting such a huge exercise nationwide.

The National Eligibility Entrance Test will be held only in 2013. “In view of the lack of resources, we have decided that the test will be held in 2013, and the National Board for Examination will be roped in to conduct the test. It will strengthen its own resources and infrastructure. Now it does not have the capability for holding the exam,” Health Secretary P.K. Pradhan said.

Indian Express:No common medical entrance test this year

Two days after the Supreme Court gave the go-ahead to the Medical Council of India (MCI) to hold a single eligibility-cum-entrance test for MBBS and post graduate medical courses, the MCI has expressed its inability to hold a Common Entrance Test (CET) this year. A senior official in the MCI said, “Starting the CET from this year will not be possible as we want to give enough time to the students to prepare for the exam. We are already in March, holding the CET this year is not possible. Even the CBSE has expressed its unwillingness to hold the exam this academic year. But next year, they have communicated, they can do it.”

Speaking to The Indian Express, Health Secretary K Chandramouli clarified, “Conducting the CET is not possible this year. All the states will have to be taken on board before we start it. Even the MCI officials know they will not be able to conduct it this year.”

Hope this post clears all the confusions and clears the path for better preparation for AIPGE 2012 and those who are starting their house surgeoncy can start preparing for the NEET PG 2013 keeping their full faith on the central government.

Inspiring quotes to stay focused.

There are times when we feel dull, depressed. A year of intense study can deteriorate our health, but maintain your focus, success is within reach and all glory will be yours.

I have compiled 3 quotes which will lighten up your feeling and give you a new energy on the way forward, keep going.

“Action is the real measure of intelligence All achievements, all earned riches, have their beginning in an idea Don’t wait. The time will never be just right”.

“Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to cut all sources of retreat. Only by doing so can one be sure of maintaining that state of mind known as a burning desire to win – essential to success Man, alone, has the power to transform his thoughts into physical reality; man, alone, can dream and make his dreams come true”.

“The ladder of success is never crowded at the top. The starting point of all achievement is desire. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat”.

Walking down the memory lane, can you remember?

U.S. advertisement for the 11th edition from t...

Memory is an interesting subject. Since I started my MBBS course, I have experimented with a lot of things, share trading, web designing, reading online magazines etc. Trying to understand memory was one of my greatest passions. Though I understood a lot about how to remember, how to memorize sort of things, I myself didn’t apply a lot of those memory facts which I learned. As you may have understood, the gap between theory and practical application is very wide.

I have been maintaining a website puzzlehacker and a few blogs for quite some time. I tried to apply some of my ideas into my hacker puzzle, wrote about memory on my wordpress blog mindblogger .So what I am trying to deal with here, is memory and its applications in medical studies. Those who read blogs and research works maybe familiar with most of the discussed topics, but you may gain a few more points if you continue reading.

Creating memories which stick

Creating memories which stick , the motto of every advertizing agency. Don’t you remember some great advertisement’s on Doordarsan? Hamara bajaj, was a great advertisement with a good song, it was an advertisement which stood out among the crowd.  Creating memories which stick should be the aim of every student. Mixing the right quantity of emotions and dedication we can create  memories which stick.

Another trick employed by TV advertisers is to flash the advertisement repeatedly through out the day.  So this process of repetition embeds these images on our mind and imparts a feeling of familiarity, so when we go for shopping,we are most likely to pick the product of an advertiser who has spent more money and hard work on making their advertisements stick to our minds.

So revision is a word which no student should forget, forgetting to revise is as bad as forgetting to learn. If you ask me whether I follow these rules, then my answer is I am trying!

Some of the memory systems

Memory systems are used all over the world to help people remember. I will name a few of them so that you can check them out.

  1. The peg system of memory
  2. Method of loci
  3. Rhyming system
  4. Mnemonics

There are hundreds of subtopics under each of these sections, try to check them out.

I created this blog as a means to revise important topics before my MCQ exams. So most of the posts are done to revise them at a later date. I try to revise these topics in my free time, though I have been lazy in the last few weeks, I hope to catch up with the rest of the crowd in the coming months.

The importance of time decay

Haven’t you felt that you have an amazing ability to do a task at a later date, which you couldn’t do at a previous date? Does giving some time help us to do a difficult task much more easier? I have made a post on the topic:The simplest and best way to do a task which is difficult to perform

These are some of my blog posts at mindblogger:

The key to memory-3R’s

Mind mapping and learning

An earlier post How to learn medicine may come handy. Thanks to you guys, masterofmedicine is getting a lot of visitors these days, do leave some feedback which would help me to improve my writing and if you have got something worth posting don’t forget to mail me at martin.jobin@gmail.com.
