Chorda tympani

  1. Chorda tympani is a branch of facial N
  2. It carries pre ganglnglionic secretomotor parasympathetic fibres that synapse in submandibular ganglion.
  3. It runs in close relation to tympanic membrane in middle ear and leaves middle ear through petrotympanic fissure.
  4. It joins lingual N in infratemporal fossa.
  5. Preganglionic parasympathetic fibres arise in superior salivatory nucleus .
  6. Post ganglionic fibres from submandibular ganglion reach submandibular gland directly and sublingua gland via lingual N
  7. Also carries special visceral afferent(SPA) fibres carrying taste from ant 2/3rd of tongue, they relay in geniculate ganglion and ascend further.
