Glasgow coma scale

Glasgow Coma Scale(GCS) is used all over the world to determine the prognosis following head trauma. GCS score has three components,Eye Opening, Motor response, Verbal response.A GCS score below 7 carries poor prognosis and GCS score above 9 has good prognosis.

Best Eye Response

  1. No eye opening. +1
  2. Eye opening to pain. +2
  3. Eye opening to verbal command. +3
  4. Eyes open spontaneously. +4

Best Motor Response

  1. No motor response. +1
  2. Extension to pain. +2
  3. Flexion to pain. +3
  4. Withdrawal from pain. +4
  5. Localizes pain. +5
  6. Obeys commands. +6

Best Verbal Response

  1. No verbal response. +1
  2. Incomprehensible sounds. +2
  3. Inappropriate words. +3
  4. Confused. +4
  5. Oriented. +5

EMV score 465.A person who opens eyes spontaneously, obeys commands and who is well oriented gets the maximum GCS score.

Maximum score- 15

Minimum-3

<7 bad prognosis

>9 good prognosis
